Throughout the history of cooking, the chef hat played an important role. In the early days, the hat was an indicator of the chef’s status in the kitchen; the more creases in the hat the higher the status. In addition, the type of hat that each chef wore used to give information regarding the level of culinary knowledge each chef assessed. Nowadays, the chef hat is still an indicator of a chef’s position within the kitchen staff, but it’s not the pleats that tell the status, it’s the height of the hat.

Tracing back the origins and the exact date when chef hats appeared is a difficult task to complete. Traditionally, the color of the chef hat is white. Still, colored hats are starting to gain ground more and more, ranging from red, blue and grey to checkered hats.

A new addition to the range of chef hats that are available on the market is the disposable paper chef hat. It is a useful invention taking into consideration the fact that the traditional material tends to deteriorate quickly. It can be replaced immediately as the hat begins to sag, ensuring an impeccable look at any time.

The general design of the chef hat has remained the same through time. At the same time, many new variations have been developed and can be incorporated into the hats. Despite all the new details, the main utility of the hat is to prevent accients that may occur with the food.

To what sizes of the chef hat are concerned, there is inly one size that is designed to fit all head sizes. It has an adjustable velcro band around the headband of the hat. Also, a sweat band is incorporated, in order to stop the forehead from becoming drenched with sweat. The hat is usually worn on top of a hairnet that is an additional safety measure against stray hair that can fall into the meals.
